ABSTRACT
This dataset was created by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). The purpose of this dataset is to provide DEP staff and other environmental professionals with a spatially referenced dataset of permit area boundaries of active and recently active permitted coal refuse disposal areas (CRDAs) in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania state law requires those who wish to conduct mining activities within the Commonwealth submit permit applications to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and receive approval for the permit prior to commencing mining activities. A permit covers various aspects of the mining operation, such as reclamation, water quality protection, air quality protection, waste disposal, and mine subsidence control. The DEP California District Office reviews permits governing surface disposal facilities for fine and coarse coal refuse; which is generated during underground mining of bituminous coal. Modules 6.1, 6.2, and 9.1 of the Application for Bituminous Underground Mine, Coal Preparation Plant and/or Refuse Disposal Area require different maps to be submitted that show the boundaries of surface permit areas, among other features. Modules 6.2 and 9.1 require maps of a larger scale be submitted than the smaller scale Location Map required by Module 6.1. Wherever possible, this dataset contains the digitized permit boundaries of active and recently active permitted CRDAs based on the permit boundary shown on the CRDA’s most recent approved 6.2 or 9.1 map; however, in certain circumstances, permit boundaries may be digitized from smaller scale 6.1 Location Maps.
