Description:
Abstract:
Historical listing (1975-1995) of Pennsylvania fish species occurrences, as documented at 10,780 sampling points on streams and rivers throughout the state. Accessory information, such as type of sampling gear used and scientific names, are included. Threatened and endangered species, however, have been removed from the database for protection purposes. (If you require information concerning the distribution of Threatened and Endangered species in Pennsylvania, contact Andy Shiels at the PA Fish and Boat Commission.)
Purpose:
This database serves two purposes. First, it is the only comprehensive, digitally represented listing of fish species within Pennsylvania. Second, it documents the evolution of Pennsylvania's fish assemblages through the last 20 years.
Supplemental_Information:
Note - When the Pennsylvania Fish Species Database is downloaded from the PASDA website, the links which connect the supporting text (i.e. tables) files to the ArcView shapefile will be lost. In order to use the Atlas, you must first re-establish the necessary links in your ArcView project. Pafish.shp (destination/active table) is linked (i.e. one-to-many relationship) to pafbcoccur.txt (source table) via "SITE_ID" (in pafish.dbf) and "SITE-ID" (pafbcoccur.txt). Pafbcoccur.txt is joined (i.e. many-to-one relationship) to speciesfile.txt via "SPECIES". If you have problems re-establishing these links/joins in the ArcView TABLES module, or are unfamiliar with the process, first consult the HELP menu in ArcView by entering "link tables" and "join tables" in the INDEX (i.e. keyword search) menu. (The ESRI/ArcView instructions are very clear.)

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
All attribute data (e.g. species, gear, scientific name) have been manually inspected for spatial and content (i.e. typos) accuracy. Inspections were performed by running the Fish Species Database and comparing results with the original fish records.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Each of the 10875 data entries are represented as individual points, and are therefore not subject to logical consistency errors such as overshoots, dangling nodes, duplicate arcs, etc. Coordinate accuracy was tested by manually verifying geo-referenced species occurrences.
Completeness_Report:
The integrity of geo-referenced data within the Fish Species Database was verified by running the Database and comparing results with the original fish records. Note: When the Pennsylvania Fish Species Database is downloaded from the PASDA website, the links which connect the supporting text (i.e. tables) files to the ArcView shapefile will be lost.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal positional accuracy was dependant upon the level of detail included in the original fish records, and were tested by manually verifying geo-referenced species occurrences.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission conducts annual summer fish surveys on lakes, rivers, and streams throughout the state. The data presented here are based upon these annual surveying records. Because a single organization was responsible for the collection of all records within the Pennsylvania Fish Species Database, many inconsistencies in method and effort have been eliminated.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
All of the site locations examined by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission during their annual summer fish surveys were located on 7.5" USGS quads. The geographic coordinates (i.e. longitude & latitude) for each site were then used to generate a geo-referenced point in an ArcInfo coverage, with the necessary fish data being manually appended within the Tables module. Once all of the Fish and Boat Commission records had been entered, the coverage was converted to an ArcView shapefile, with the supporting files "Pafbcoccur.txt" and "Speciesfile.txt".
