Abstract:
Landuse for the Delaware Water Gap and Surrounding watersheds and tributaries
Purpose:
to study forest fragmentation and water quality effects on the Delaware River tributary and watersheds around the Delaware Water Gap

Dataset:  Delgap_photointerp_landuse.shp   (from Photointerp_plus_attributes_alb83.shp) 

The polygons do not have a unique id (apart from the ones assigned by Arc)
Each is attributed by the following variables:
"	Dissolve:  a locally unique code  used simply to join polys that ran onto adjacent photos into a single poly  
"	Landuse:  the land use PI code as it was recorded by the interpreter.  See codes list to interpet codes.
"	Hse_inch:  the number of dots falling on houses in a 1 sq. inch area.  There were a total of 279 (?) dots per sq. inch.  
"	Hserdyd:  the land cover PI code as it was recorded by the interpreter - all residential polygons have this attribute
"	Bldg_percent:  the % of the land cover occupied by houses/buildings (first two digits of "hserdyd" value)
"	%road:  the % of the land cover occupied by roads (the second two digits of "hserdyd" value)
"	%grass:  the % of the land cover occupied by grass (the third two digits of "hserdyd" value)
"	%trees:  the % of the land cover occupied by trees (subtracting the 3 previous values from 100)
"	F_N_background:  low-low, low, and medium density residential areas were additionally coded as having a primarily forested or primarily nonforest background.  This is the last digit of the land use code.  Here that value is split out.
Notes:  In some instances a polygon attributed as relatively high density residential may have a seemingly unusually low % houses or low % roads value.  Or vice versa with a relatively low density residential polygon.  In general the interpreter found the % cover values to be more consistently applied than the land use labels.

Each residential class is attributed with: 
(a)	the number of houses per square mile, and 
(b)	(b) the % that is occupied by houses, roads, grass, and forest.  
Both are estimated using a (16 x 16 dpi) dot grid overlaid on the interpreted area.

Minimum mapping unit decisions:
1 acre mmu -- nothing is mapped that is < 1 acre in size and < 120 feet in width.  
5 acre mmu - is applied for inclusions inside developed landuses (urban and ag).  Also applied is a minimum width of 330 feet for these inclusions (derived from a 1:2 long:short axis for the minimum 5 acre area).  Examples of such inclusions would be:  forest area within residential, forest within transportation, commercial within residential, agriculture within residential, transportation within commercial, etc.  

Defaults:  areas less than the required mmu were grouped with its most similar neighbor.  E.g. roads (which are typically < 120 ft in width) with forest on one side and residential on the other were grouped with the residential land use.  

*Minimum:  A minimum had to be defined for the low-low density residential land use class.  This was defined as:  5 houses in the polygon/cluster, where the houses are no more than 1000 feet (1 inch) apart from each other.  -i.e. isolated houses in forest are not mapped as residential but left as part of the forest polygon.
This rule applies for houses built into a forest matrix.  For houses surrounded by grass/yard  > 1acre in size, the area can classed as residential with no minimum # of houses if it's not an agricultural land use.
