Land Cover by Breeding Bird Atlas Block based on National Land Cover Dataset 1992

Purpose:

The Pennsylvania Breeding Bird Atlas Project was a cooperative, volunteer-based survey. As part of the Gap Project, the Atlas provides the most comprehensive survey of nesting birds in Pennsylvania's history. Based at the United States Fish and Wildlife Service Cooperative Research Unit at the Pennsylvania State University, the mission of the Gap Project is to identify "gaps" in the protection of biologically rich areas of the commonwealth.

The land cover information was derived from the land cover data layer originally created for the PA Gap Analysis project (PALCURB).  This layer originally contained 24 land cover categories ranging between (11-18, 21-28, & 31-38) as listed here:

First digit:  0 = Outside PA
                   1 = Rural
                   2 = Low intensity (suburban) development
                   3 = High intensity (urban) development

 	Second digit:  0 = Outside PA
                    1 = Water
                    2 = Evergreen forest
                    3 = Mixed forest
                    4 = Deciduous forest
                    5 = Transitional
                    6 = Perennial herbaceous
                    7 = Annual herbaceous
                    8 = Barren/hard-surface/rubble/gravel


For the purposes of calculating disturbance scores for the CWC’s project areas the land cover layer was reclassified into 8 categories that more effectively represent their importance to the disturbance scores being calculated.  These values are as follows:

	1 = Water (1) (all water classes (11, 21, & 31)
	2 = Forest (3 original forest classes evergreen (2), mixed (3) & deciduous (4))
	3 = Transitional (5)
	4 = Perennial herbaceous (6)
	5 = Annual herbaceous (7)
	6 = Barren/hard-surface/rubble/gravel (8)
	7 = Suburban (all low intensity classes (22–27), except 28 – low intensity barren)
	8 = Urban (low intensity barren (28) and all high intensity urban classes 32-38)
