Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access

Abstract:

State-owned and maintained public roads within Pennsylvania as extracted from the PENNDOT Roadway Management System (RMS).  Includes fields describing pavement type, traffic volumes and other information as detailed below.

Purpose:

Public information and support for transportation planning, design and development.

Supplemental_Information:

This data is intended for use at 1:24,000 or smaller scale.

Process_Description:

Digitized into Bentley Microstation system from most recently available 7.5 minute USGS topographic quadrangles on a stable (mylar) base.  Updated information is added from orthophotography, construction plans and maps as this information becomes available.

Continually verified and corrected through visual comparison with orthophotos from USGS and other sources and GPS ground-checking as possible.

For Interstate highways (rt_no_prfx=I), this attribute can be decoded to indicate mile markers. Segment numbers ending in 1 or 0 are mileposts (for example, a seg_no of 0221 or 0220 indicates the 22nd mile). Segment numbers ending in 4 or 5 indicate a half-mile. Interstates are generally measured South to North or West to East. Even numbered segments indicate the measured direction of travel while odd numbered segments indicate the other side of the highway. Segments numbers ending with other digits are county line breaks.
