Title:
Greenway Hubs
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form:vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
Hubs are areas that have a high natural resource value such as large intact forests or abundant wildlife. They have little fragmentation and include unfragemented forests and farmland. Hubs are both undisturbed natural lands and adjacent protected lands such as state parks, forests or state game lands. The hubs and corridors are the major concentration of the map and serve as the core conservation areas in the PA Highlands Greenway. The hub and spoke system was created by AMC by combining the results of two analysis techniques, stronghold analysis and the Natural Lands Trust’s Smart ConservationTM.. Stronghold analysis identifies areas that are least affected by man-made disturbances such as roads and fragmentation of the natural landscape while Smart Conservation determines the ecological health of an area. The combination of these two analyses in conjunction with the knowledge of local stakeholders was used to prioritize core conservation areas.
Purpose:
To illustrate a hub and corridor greenway of threatened land in the Pennsylvania Highlands.
Supplemental_Information:
Funding was financed in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, Environmental Stewardship Fund, under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation as well as the William Penn Foundation.

Process_Description:
Thirty-meter National Land Cover Dataset pixels relating to forests, wetlands, and open water were identified and reclassified to equal the same value. All contiguous pixels totaling less than fifty Hectares on the ground were removed. A buffer was built around roads removing a 200 meters wide path from primary roads, and a 100 meters wide path around secondary roads. Multipart shapes were converted onto a single part, and all shapes were then dissolved onto one shape. The aggregate tool in Spatial Analyst was used with the following settings: Cell size: 10 Aggregation method:Minimum Expand Extent? Yes Use no value cells? Yes Polygons greater than 20 hectares are selected and combined with Natural Land Trust Smart Cinservation data to create strongholds. The USDA Forest Service highlands boundary was used to seperate the PA highlands into two regions. The highest ten percent of stronghold lands were extracted in the area defined by the Forest Service boundary. The highest five percent of stronghold lands were wxtracted in the remaining area, due to the high averages produced by Michaux State Forest. The two sets of data were comined, and a nearest neighbor analysis of 1000 meters was performed.
