Description:
Abstract:
Original feature locations and descriptions created by the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey (PAGS) and the Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP) (1979-2020). Geoheritage classification, updated locations and descriptions, and database schema by PAGS Geoheritage Committee (2025).These digital data represent geoheritage features in Pennsylvania. The data were compiled in an ArcPro 3.1.4 geodatabase and include one feature class. These GIS data are part of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey publication DR 25-01.0.The data were funded in part by the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program under STATEMAP award number G23AC00592.The purpose of the project was to develop an authoritative geodatabase of Pennsylvania’s Geoheritage features. The collection of geoheritage features included in the PNHP’s Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory (PNDI) (2021) was used to initiate this project. The locations and descriptions of features for much of the initial data were sourced from the Outstanding Scenic Geological Features of Pennsylvania parts 1 and 2 (1979 and 1987). Locations and descriptions for these features were reviewed for accuracy and completeness through a literature review and with digital desktop mapping techniques. Geoheritage classification and value assessment completed with unpublished PAGS-developed classification schemas.
Purpose:
Geoheritage features in Pennsylvania used by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey and Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program. This geodatabase is to be used as a primary source of information, for decision making, and/or environmental review.
Supplemental_Information:
These data have been prepared in accordance with Pennsylvania Bureau of Geological Survey standards. The data may be used if credit is given to the bureau.
