Abstract:
Based on Terrabyte PHASEview backdrop of MRLC Landsat imagery this theme classifies the vegetative land cover of Pennsylvania as it corresponds to the presence or absence and physiognomy of vegetation. The progression uses eight categories of land cover including Water surface, conifer forest, mixed conifer and broadleaf forest, broadleaf forest, transitional (a vegetation mixture of several types on microscale), perennial herbaceous, annual herbaceous (nonforage crops) and barren (rock rubble, pavement, structures, etc.) at a 30 meter resolution.
Purpose:
Part of the Pennsylvania Gap Analysis progression, this dataset was designed to facilitate the interpretation of Pennsylvania's surface vegetation and habitat models for vertebrate species in the Commonwealth.

Analysis for areas obscured in original satellite imagery and other areas selected at random or because of problem in satellite analysis were verified through aerial videography or physical inspection.

Landsat Thematic Mapper data was classified through the Spectraplex process to produce the Terrabyte images. The 255 land cover classifications from the Terrabyte images were reinterpreted and assigned into one of the eight land cover classes corresponding to a spectral 'ordination' of increasing aggregate reflectance. Cluster assignments checked for scene-to-scene consistency and spot checks were made in the field.

Classifications were ground checked and compared with DOQQs to verify.
