Abstract:

This theme shows three classifications of urban areas in the state of Pennsylvania. The coverage was digitized using Terrabyte images from The Office for Remote Sensing of Earth Resources at Penn State University and Pennsylvania Roads coverage. Areas were classified in three categories: high-intensity urban, low-intensity urban and non-urban based on vegetation as shown by the satellite imagery and road density.

Purpose:

Part of the Pennsylvania Gap Analysis progression, this dataset was designed to facilitate the interpretation of Pennsylvania's surface vegetation and habitat models for vertebrate species in the Commonwealth.

Compressed Terrabyte image data was overlaid with county CLF data on a computer display and urbanized locations were interactively interpreted/digitized. The resulting vector format was converted to the Arc Grid format for use in the habitat modelling.
