Abstract:

This vector layer represents the 1 kilometer grid used for sampling and habitat range analysis by the Pennsylvania Gap Analysis Program. Each 1-km cell is attributed with identifying information and information about ecoregion and existence of leading landscape within the cell.

Purpose:

Part of the Pennsylvania Gap Analysis progression, this dataset was designed to facilitate the interpretation of Pennsylvania's surface vegetation and habitat models for vertebrate species in the Commonwealth.

Process_Description:

The 1 km grid was constructed by using the ARC/INFO - GENERATE command. A vector layer was created with its origin located in the Southwest corner of the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle map Littleton, W.Va.-Pa. Littleton quad includes the Southwest corner of Pennsylvania. The coordinate of the Southwest corner of the quad map is 39o37'30" latitude and 80o37'30" longitude. This process created a lattice of 1 km square (1 km x 1 km) cells covering Pennsylvania. The area of each cell is 100 hectares (1,000,000 m2). To reduce the number of cells contained by this layer and, hopefully, reduce the computer processing time, cells that extended beyond one full cell outside the state boundary were removed. The final layer contains 119,705 cells.
