Abstract:

This layer is an interim delineation of Pennsylvania's physiographic ecoregions at the Province, Section and Subsection level of the U.S. Forest Service led ECOMAP heirarchy. At this level the heirarchy delineates ecological units at a landscape level based on environmental and biotic factors including, geomorphology, lithology and stratigraphy, potential natural vegetation, fauna, climate, hydrology, natural disturbance regimes, land use and other aspects of cultural ecology. The subregions delineated in this layer can be considered refinements to the larger physiographic provinces in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey is in the process of further refining these regions to produce a final layer delineating regions at the ECOMAP landtype level.

Purpose:

Part of the Pennsylvania Gap Analysis progression, this dataset was designed to facilitate the interpretation of Pennsylvania's surface vegetation and habitat models for vertebrate species in the Commonwealth.

Process_Description:

Based on descriptions in Bailey (1995) and other sources or based on topography and other factors were boundaries were drawn on 1:50,000 county topo sheets. These were reduced 50% and transcribed to 1:100,000 mylar maps which were digitized, mylars were overlaid on checkplots and corrections were made in digitizer units to the linework. Reslulting panels in UTM were assembled into two panels for Pennsylvania one for zone 17 and one for zone 18. These panels were edgematched then projected into the Lambert Conformal Conic projection.
