Breaklines for hydrographic features (defined from the Allegheny_County_Hydrography dataset) were digitized from aerial photos supplied by Pictometry International and the lidar data. The hydrographic features, include water bodies (> 0.5acres), wide rivers (> 16ft wide), an artifical path representing the centerline of the wide rivers and waterbodies, stream centerlines (rivers < 15ft wide) and culverts. Elevation values from the lidar data were conflated to the “z-values” of the features at 3ft intervals from the lidar data using QCoherent’s LP360 software. Elevation values were conflated to the Single Line Stream, Artifical Path, and Culvert features using a downstream constraint algorithm. After the artificial paths were conflated, a script was used to copy the elevation values from the artificial path to the surrounding wide river polygons, which acts to flatten the wide river from streambank to streambank. Elevation values for the water body polygons were added as an attribute to the feature class based on the minimum lidar elevation value along the shoreline of the water body. The multipoint feature class, water bodies, and centerlines were used to create a bare earth terrain that was clipped to the city boundary with an additional 500ft buffer. The city boundary was supplied by Allegheny County. The terrain was converted to a DEM with 6ft cell resolution. The DEM is used to create the 2ft tiled contours. The contours are edited in the following manner: Lines shorter than 36ft (1.5 raster cells) are deleted and the shape of contour lines along the edge of water ways are checked to make sure they do not weave into the waterways. Attributes are added for 10ft, 20ft, and 50ft Index contours. A Lidar Tile Index Feature Class is created for the lidar files.
