Pennsylvania Spatial Data Access

Abstract:

Coverages containing Anthracite coal seam data by quadrangle for the state of Pennsylvania.  Digitized from the Harrisburg Bureau of Mining and Reclamation mylar map system each quadrangle contains multiple coverages identifying seams in that quad.   Also includes coal mining refuse disposal sites, permitted sites, point coverages of deep mine entry and other surface features of deep mines and Small Operators Assistance Program (SOAP) areas.

Purpose:

These coverages are provided for informational purposes only and should not be sole means of decision making and are in no way a substitute for actual on the ground observation.

Supplemental_Information:

A file with 'a' or 'b' appended to the seam abbreviation indicates that it was developed from Mylar 1 or 2, respectively, For example a file named Ba.e00 indicated that it is a coverage of the B Coal Seam (Lower Kittanning) that was developed from Mylar 1 for that quad and a file named Pittb.e00 indicates a file from the Pittsburgh coal seam developed from Mylar 2 for that quad.
Filenames with 'w' appended indicates that the coverage was created from WPA mine maps created in the 1930's.  Care should be taken as these coverages may be distorted.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:

Coverages show the extent of permitting to the best of the draftsman's ability.  Denied permits originally drawn on the mylars in red cross hatch were sometimes mistaken for WPA mapped mines.  This is particularly true in the north west part of the Bituminous coal field and the entire Anthracite field.  There are NO WPA mapped mines in the Anthracite field.

Completeness_Report:

Coverage is believed to be complete for all areas with mining or permitting activities, with the following known exceptions: in Cool Spring quad B needs region built and in Reynoldsville quad Ca needs regions built.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:

WPA mapping from 1930's may be unreliable and coverages may appear distorted.  These coverages are presented to give a reasonable guideline (+/-90) feet of what is on the ground in that area.  No attempt was made to correlate coal seams when the quads were digitized.  Some coverages for coal seams may appear where the coal seam does not exist.  Care should be taken when these anomalies are discovered.
