Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is Elevation-derived hydrography (EDH) for the 140G00221F0093-PA_EDHL_Raystown_2021_D21 project covering HU 02050304 - Lower Juniata Watershed. The hydrography layer contains line features representing stream rivers and polygons representing waterbody. The EDH was derived from light detection and ranging (lidar) derived Digital Elevation Model of 1m, flown as part of 3 different projects between November 2017 and March 2020. This dataset was created to meet the requirements of the USGS Elevation-derived hydrography specification, https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/ss/elevation-derived-hydrography-specifications. The line features contain Elevation class (EClass) codes useful for hydro-enforcement, including culvert identification. Feature Class (FCLASS) and Feature codes (FCodes) are hydrography codes compatible with the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). The EDH product should be suitable for pre-conflation to the NHD.
Purpose:
The EDH data was created in order to improve the National Hydrography Dataset, including better aligning hydrography features with 3DEP elevation datasets horizontally and vertically. These data are intended as the source data to update the National Hydrography Dataset. These data have also been created such that they may be used for hydro-enforcement.
Supplemental_Information:
This dataset ris part of the 140G00221F0093-PA_EDHL_Raystown_2021_D21 project.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribution was based on the original National Hydrography Dataset attributions and the lidar derived ground model. All features should contain attributes defined in the USGS Elevation-derived specification.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
All features meet NHD topology rules. Points, nodes, lines, and areas conform to topological rules. Lines intersect only at nodes, and all nodes anchor the ends of lines. Lines do not overshoot or undershoot other lines where they are supposed to meet. There are no duplicate lines. Lines bound areas and lines identify the areas to the left and right of the lines. Gaps and overlaps among areas do not exist. All areas close. The dataset was compared to the bare earth Digital Elevation Model and channels present within the surface that meet minimum mapping requirements were added. The dataset was compared to the original NHD for the study area and any feature from the NHD that was did not have a channel representation in the DEM was not added to the EDH. Stream connectivity was checked and any isolated networks were verified. Features added without clear channels present in the DEM are allowed if added as drainageways.
Completeness_Report:
The completeness of the data is relative to the DEM to which the EDH must match. The goal of this product is to be vertically and horizontally aligned with the 3DEP bare earth DEM. Published NHD is used as a guide for feature extraction and densification.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
All linear features are placed within a channel of the bare earth DEM. Waterbody features are placed at the apparent limit or banks of the waterbody. Waterbodies match the hydro-flattening breakline extent.
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
All features have z-values associated with every vertex. Linear features are flat or flow consistently downstream. Z-values are at or just below the surface of the DEM. Exceptions are allowed to maintain monotonicity and through connectors. Waterbodies that do not flow are flat and the z-value are at or just below the surface of the DEM at the edge of the polygon.

Process_Description:
Data was collected using a combination of flow directions and accumulation routines, manual digitization, and proprietary processing and QAQC methods. All data was manually reviewed.
Polygons - Waterbody polygons were created using the existing lidar breaklines combined with newly digitized polygons for Lakes, Ponds, and Reservoirs approximately > .4 hectares and streams and canals > 15m nominal width in accordance with EDH specification. Additionally, all features previously existing in the NHD were captured and updated. Minimum vertex spacing is 1.5 meters.
Polylines - Polylines were captured in accordance with EDH specifications including all features previously existing in the NHD if evidence of the feature was present in the ground model. Connectivity was established using geometric network tracing. All features were traversed.

A short integer one-digit code defining whether a feature is intended for use as an NHD feature (will be used for conflation), a non-nhd feature (outside of the collection criteria and not intended to be used for conflation), a non-hydrography feature (elevation dataset limitation). An example of a point feature is a Sink. An example of a line feature is a stream that is too narrow to represent (<15 meters wide) as a polygon, so is represented with a line. An example of a polygon feature is a wide river, or a lake/pond. If a feature is not an NHD feature, and is necessary for elevation processing, a 0 is used as the FType. A polygon representing a low-confidence area is an example of a feature that would not be used in the NHD but may be useful for elevation processing.

Attribute_Definition:
A long integer field containing a coded value. Most of the feature codes are equivalent to the National Hydrography Dataset FCode value, which is a five-digit integer code representing various hydrologic feature types. For instance, a Lake/Pond has FCode type 39000, and a Stream/River has an FCode of 46000. The codes that do not have a corresponding NHD code are included to differentiate features that may be useful in describing limitations in the elevation dataset, potentially impacting hydrography and elevation derivatives.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Elevation-Derived Hydrography features collected under the scope of this specification document represent a subset of the features found within the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Where appropriate, the FCode values and descriptions match the NHD specifications. Elevation features used as breaklines for hydro-flattening, or for other elevation surface treatments, are identified with an elevation class as well as a hydrography feature code. Table 2 contains the complete set of domain values required with this specification. The companion documents Elevation-Derived Hydrography Acquisition Specification (Terziotti and Archuleta, 2020) and Elevation-Derived Hydrography—Representation, Extraction, Attribution, and Delineation Rules (Archuleta and Terziotti, 2020) further define the fields, domains, and minimum feature collection requirements for each required feature.
