Abstract:

Boundaries of current public water supplier's (PWS) service areas.  This data set contains the present service area boundary of the water system and does not contain locations of surface and groundwater sources, storage facilities, transmission and distribution system lines, and interconnections with other water systems. Revisions, updates and additions are done on an as needed basis.  All boundaries should be considered approximate.

Purpose:

As part of Pennsylvania's State Water Plan this data set is used to determine non-public water supply areas (self-supplied). It is also used to help determine the population served and water supply demand.

90+% of active service boundary areas for Pennsylvania public water supplies, excluding non transient noncommunity water systems, and transient noncommunity water systems.

Preferred mapping accuracy is United States Geological Survey 7.5 minute topographic maps, scanned at a minimum of 200 dpi.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

Since the boundaries polygons are based on maps submittted by each PWS, a method to eliminate the overlapping service areas and boundary gaps between neighboring service areas was needed.  When overlaps were identified a map was created and sent back to the PWS to correct the overlapping areas.  In cases when no verification was available the overlaps were merged with a service area based on the best available information.

Boundaries based on submitted maps, perferred 7.5 minute topgraphic maps, although other types and scale maps were submitted and used in creating boundaries.  Features created by  a boundary was created by using other sources of information, such as the Annual Water Supply Report.
