Description:

Abstract:

Coal mining has occurred in Pennsylvania for over a century.  The maps to these coal mines are stored at many various public and private locations (if they still exist at all) throughout the commonwealth.  This dataset tries to identify the Mined Out Areas of the various coal seams in Pennsylvania. This information can be used for many environmental related issues, including mine land reclamation and determination of needs for Mine Subsidence Insurance. The information in this dataset was gathered from mine maps at these various locations so that the data can be readily available to environmental professionals.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to combine location information of coal mines into one place from various sources so that the data can be readily available to environmental professionals.

This dataset was created by digitizing georeferenced mine maps of unknown accuracy and unknown coordinate systems to various base maps, including but not limited to USGS topographic maps and PAMAP aerial photography. Therefore horizontal accuracy of the polygons representing the digitized mined out area are UNKNOWN.

This dataset was created from digitizing mine maps developed from multiple mine operators, developed over a time period more than century long.  The original source of the digitized mined out area locations comes from these maps. Credit should be given to the mine operators for developing the original mine maps.

Process_Description:

The first step of how this data was created was by scanning historic mine maps from various mine map repositories, including but not limited to DEP California District Office, DEP Bureau of Mine Safety, DOI Office of Surface Mining, CONSOL Energy's collection stored at PITT Archives Services Center, PBS Coal, RGGS Land and Minerals, Cambria County Courthouse, and the R&P Collection stored at IUP.  Various scanners were used at different locations at different times. Once a map was scanned, most of the electronic images were post-processed using Adobe Photoshop CSx, to reduce the overall file size to a manageable size to allow our computers to display them efficiently. Some of the processes performed on the images include grayscaling, image size reduction, cropping, and autocontrasting. Once the images were a managaeble size, they were georeferenced using ArcGIS to base maps, including but not limited to 7.5 minute USGS topographic maps and PAMAP aerial photography. Next, the digitized mined out areas on the map image were digitized and attributed.
