TOOLS - In ArcGIS, a tool changes the mouse control from it's original graphic (usually an arrow) to a new one which performs a specific function.
Identify - Displays data facts about the selected feature
Measure - Allows user to draw a line and/or segments whose Length and Segment Length are displayed at the lower left corner of the window.
Pan - User may use the HAND mouse control to 'grab' an image in a View and move it around in the View.
Select Features - Icon will select chosen features by clicking on them. Select multipule features by holding down the shift key.
Select Elements - Icon will select chosen features from the attribute table by clicking on them. Select multipule features by holding down the shift key.
Zoom In and Out - The magnifying glass can be used to define a box on the View map to be enlarged or decreased.
BUTTONS - In ArcGIS a button, when depressed, carries out a particular function as defined by it's script.
Common Buttons:
Add Theme - Opens window which allows user to find and add a new data file.
Clear Selected Features - will deselect any features which have been highlighted either within the View or the Table.
Open Attribute Table -Opens the data table associated with a specific layer selected from the View
Find - Allows you to find Features, Route Locations, Addresses - in all layers contained in the view.
Edit Legend - To edit the Legend (color or name), double left click on the one you want to change.
Save - Saves the entire ArcGIS project, or prompts the user for a file name if the project has not been saved before.
Theme Properties - Opens a window which allows the user to apply desired properties and descriptions of the selected theme.
Zoom full Extent - Changes the View to display all themes.
Zoom to Active Layer -Changes the View to display a theme which is selected in the legend.
Zoom to Selected - Changes the View to display features which have been selected or highlighted.
Zoom to Previous - Changes the View to the previous display method.
Zoom IN and OUT - Changes the View to visually move closer to (enlarge) or away from (decrease) the center of the view.
