Goal In this exercise, you will join datatables using common fields. The purpose of joining tables is to add more data to your project.

At the end of this exercise you will be able to do the following:

Step 1.If necessary, start ArcGIS. Add the "Countbnd.shp"and "Gwndep99.shp" to your View1.

Step 2.  Open the "Attributes of Gwndep99.shp" and the"Attributes of Countbnd.shp"using the Open Attribute Table button atttable.jpg (5769 bytes)to display both tables.

Step 3.When the "Attributes of Gwndep99.shp" table opens, scroll right and Click on the Countyfield name. The column will appear in blue. Look for the County field in the"Attributes of Countbnd.shp" and highlight the name. You will use this common county field to join the two tables.

Note: You want to create a map illustrating higher potential use of groundwater due to higher population.  The "Countbnd.shp" has the population data and the "Gwndep99.shp" has the groundwater use information.

When you want to obtain information from two different tables and you have a common field, you have a one-to-one relationship.  When this criteria is met you are able to make a Join.

Step 4. The "Attributes of Countbnd.shp"table has too much information, so before we join, we are going to l hide the fields that we will not be using. Make the "Attributes of Countbnd.shp" active by clicking on it's title bar.

Step 5.  From the Table pull-down menu select Properties. The Table Properties box appears. Un-check everything in the Visible field except: County and Pop 1990.
