Goal: In this exercise you will learn how to find features that are inside other features, for example, points within a polygon.
At the end of this exercise you will understand the following:
Step 1.Add two themes, a polygon theme, "Countbnd.shp",and a point theme, "Gwndep99.shp".

Step 2.Make the "Countbnd.shp" theme active. Using the Select features button
, select Franklin County
. If you do not know where Franklin County is located, remember to use the Find
tool
and when the Find Text in Attributes dialog box appears type Franklin
and say Find, or you can use the Identify tool
.

Step 3. From the Selection pull-down menu, choose Select By Location. The Select By Location dialog box displays.
Step 4.From the top drop-down list, choose (I want to) select features from. From the middle drop-down list, choose "Gwndep99.shp". From the third box select (that) are completely within and from the last box select (the features in this layer) countbnd. Your selections form this sentence: I want to select features from Gwndep99 that are completely within countbnd.
Note: Since we selected only Franklin County this query will only selected features of Gwndep99 that are completely contained in the county we highlighted.

Step 5.Click the Apply button

Step 6.Use the Zoom In tool
to get a closer look at Franklin County. ArcGIS selects water sources from the currently selected set that also are in the selected Franklin County.
