Step 5. Make the View active. Both themes (Countbnd.shp and Gwndep.shp) are active. Click on the "Gwndep99.shp" theme to make it the only active theme. Next you will summarize the groundwater sources based on the values in the County field to determine the number of groundwater sources in each county.
Step 6. Make the "Attributes of Gwndep99.shp" table active, and make the County field active by clicking on its title.

Step 7. From the
Field pull-down menu, choose Summarize or Click on the Summarize button
. The Summary Table Definition dialog box is displayed.

Step 8. Click the Save As button to navigate to c:\data\ where you want to save the summary table. We are going to use the default settings. Click the OK button to create the summary table.
Note: We are summarizing without using the Add button to create other fields, the summary table will contain only two fields: a Description field and a Count field. ArcView creates a sum1.dbf table for each county. This table sums up how many groundwater sources are in each county.
